More to come soon! Get the ones you want first!

I want to spend as much time enjoying comic books as I can.

So, when I see a massive pile of books that needs to be organized (either because I don’t like clutter or I need a way to safely get to my bed without mountain climbing gear), comics seem a lot less fun. I know some people get endless joy out of bagging and boarding their latest comics and filing them away, but I buy comics for the story. I want to read it and reread it until my eyeballs fall out, which is hard to do when all the chapters of the story are jumbled in a pile. Even if I organize the crap out of them, I’ve still got to dig through a box to find what I want to read.

I’ve decided that when my hobby starts to feel more like a chore than fun, it might be time for a change. Now is one of those times, so digital comics and I are starting to become good friends.

I know some people think digital is the devil or the death of comic books, but I really don’t understand why they think that. It’s a change, but it’s not mandatory, and I doubt it ever will be. Some people will always want print comics. Some people will prefer to read digital comics. Some people will ignore both of those and wait for the trade. That’s the great thing about comics – Not only are there an amazing number of stories out there to read, but there’s also bunch of ways to read them.

Traveling a lot? Then I’m sure you have an iPad or an Android tablet, and you can get your books on the go from Comixology or Diamond Digital or Dark Horse Digital or a gazillion other places. Got almost every issue of Batman, but you’re missing a few? I know this awesome place that’s got a great collection of back issues and the latest releases. Want to have really sweet looking library in your house? Hardcover collections and graphic novels haven’t ever looked as good as they do now. Can’t get to a comic shop? There are mail-order programs that send comics to your house.

Here’s why I’m starting to prefer digital comic, though – I actually prefer trades, but I’m too impatient to wait, and I don’t want to be bothered anymore with finding the space to store single issues. Yes, I could donate them or find a place to sell them, but that’s extra work and a chore. Like I said, when my hobby starts to feel like a chore, it’s time for change. If my tablet runs out of memory, I just have to delete some books. And all of my purchases are stored in my account anyway, so if I want to reread something that I’ve deleted (and I’m sure I will), I’ll just download it again. And anything I absolutely love I’ll get in trade, and if it’s only an issue or two, then I’ll track those down.

Even if my tablet does stop working or digital comics tank, I’ll survive until the trade comes out. Yeah, I’ll be aggravated, but it’s not the end of the world – it’s just a change.

Change is good.
